Scaffolding | Survival of Neighbourhood Noise

Written by Susan Lane SLCM Keeper of ColourMine

Scaffolding: A light-hearted piece following a noisy few weeks of a scaffolding gate blowing in the strong overnight winds – and giving me many sleepless nights.

End of the Scaffolding Holiday

Finally, it’s all gone, the clanging and banging all night long
A bit of a breeze and Whooptidee, that flippin’ scaffolding
Even woke me
I’m so glad it’s no longer there, I know it was there for a job
But it wasn’t shared, and the noise
Wasn’t supposed to be shared by me,
When the wind got up and the gate began to squeak

It went from a squeak to a squeal, it continued for hours
Increasing in volume until the wind died down
To a waft that you could hardly feel
At its worst with the wind and the rain
Everything waving like mad
Especially the trees without refrain
It didn’t seem so bad in the day

Scaffolding, as I say,

Everything has gone
It’ll be quiet all night long
That’s worth celebrating for me
Even if there’s a slight storm
The wind may even blow through the trees,
Scattering all the dirt and debris

Nothing will make a sound
As the tiny tree fragments hit the ground
The bird feeders are full and hanging from the tree
But the rain is so heavy the birds are hiding it seems
None of them are wanting to get wet, oh no siree
So, it’ll wait until later, or tomorrow maybe

For now, I sit indoors

Wait for the close of day
Writing poems, concluding the dreariness
But that won’t stop my play
I’m actually glad for this foray
It gives me plenty of time
For rearranging furniture and bagging up stuff
That isn’t mine

Maybe, with this lonely spree
It’ll brighten up the future for me
Life has been tough
For a couple of decades, you see
But now I’m hoping that will ease
And living will become more pleasant for me

Just a dog and two cats,

No-one else with me
I think that’s ok, I don’t have the extra responsibility
Also, during the night and day
There’s no-one else to get in my way
I think I’ve had my fill of disaster you see
With all kinds of medical appointments
That were not for me
Now my life is settling down
I don’t have to wear a permanent frown

And the good news is
The mention of ColourMine
Makes me smile each day,
I’m so glad it came my way,
I’m still learning and plugging away
Writing down my memories and thoughts
Of joy and grief

I’m also sure there’s a soulmate out there for me

If he shows himself, it’ll be a huge shock and struggle
Because there’s absolutely no way on earth
That I’d want a repeat of the past two decades,
That’s definitely not for me
I’ve had enough of that kind of uncertainty
To last me a lifetime,
And that’s not being mean
That’s self-preservation for me

Now it’s time for a celebration,
I’ve updated my LinkedIn profile you see
I can be my own person, not a carer
No siree
Even though that’s a valued commodity
I’ve been there, done that,
Found through extended experience
It really is not for me
Even though I was looking after someone
For whom I cared deeply

Now I feel after this reprieve

I’ve got to be me
Make use of my time learning everything
I’ve already sorted ColourMine
Definitely interesting and curious
The backend and frontend
Added a variety of poems and updates every day
I’m going to grab an Asti and mull over
All of life’s eventualities that come my way

I might even go drastic and possibly,
Get all of my hair cut short
That really would be a sight to see,
All shorn off like a sheep.
I could sit on my swing, listen to the quiet
That has recently been so rare in my vicinity
Now that the scaffolding has been removed,
Oh, what a relief

I now don’t have to listen to it whine with grief

Because it was out in all kinds of weather,
Well, that’s good enough for me
Now go grab a cup of drink, join me,
We can both relax and have a ColourMine read
You know there are plenty of poems don’t you, hehe
