Cat Beds | Why cats ignore them – survival & love

Written by Susan Lane SLCM Keeper of ColourMine

Cat Beds: Trying to keep up with the foibles of the cats in this residence can be quite challenging especially when they think they rule the roost and can demand preferential treatment whilst living here for free.

So Many Cat Beds in the Conservatory

Every so often I see another bed and think
Those cats would just love this in the conservatory
I started with one, then it was two then three
They really don’t realise how lucky they are
They’re not ever satisfied
With everything that is done for them for free

They seemed to want a different bed each day
They don’t seem to understand
That we are short of space
I introduced pillows so they had more of a choice
Of where to sleep after play
Everything has covers or towels to keep the beds clean
They’re easily washed and dried, see I’m not mean
The cats have been given lots of choice by me
They have lots of places to hide
That are snuggly and clean

They spend much of their days asleep

I know it’s summer
But I was feeling generous
Because now is the time
That winter houses go cheap
So, I recently got some outdoor Katden’s
They were fairly reasonable,
All enclosed, and would be extremely nice
To be in when the winter chill creeps in

Each Katden now has some kind of liner
That will keep it warm,
When the temperature drops and icicles form
It only needs to be down a few degrees
So, it was handy when I found out recently
There was a dedicated liner
I found the combination on Marketplace
It was somewhere near me

The second Katden bought by me

Was just the enclosed plastic house
It was cheap and didn’t have a warm fabric liner,
Well,
I found an ordinary enclosed cat bed
Which would do quite nicely
I easily inserted it snuggly, oh,
That was a definite treat
Those houses now will keep the cats warm
Even if the outside temperature hits minus 8 degrees C

Your breath is a cloud of white
Every time that you breathe whether heavy or light
In winter it gets so cold in that conservatory
Even with a heater
It only keeps it just above 5 degrees C
And with thermal curtains on the roof
That makes a definite improvement for them and me

So far, I’m up to I think possibly bed number thirteen

Yes, seriously
And that’s only for two cats
They can be quite picky over sleeping arrangements
Believe me
I don’t understand why they’ll sleep in it today
But tomorrow they think it’s not suitable
They won’t go anywhere near
They just sniff, turn their noses up and walk away

Perhaps they’re wanting something casual
Where the bed is changed everyday
Like maybe a bed and breakfast
That would certainly keep everything fresh
From smells of dirt, mould and decay

Or maybe they’ve considered the possibility

Of them having something more grand
Like a permanent maid
In a uniform
With a well-known logo brand

Well, whatever they want,
I know they’re going to be extremely sad,
Because there’s only going to be me
And I’m not wearing a maid’s uniform
I’m not paid enough,
I’m doing this for love so not completely free for me

Especially considering Herr Ob

Who already thinks, in the pecking order,
He’s way above me
Like when he decides to order me about
When I’m sitting drinking my tea
Whilst uploading my poems onto the ColourMine feed

I’m not taking any of his crap
He may be a master,
Only because he’s male
But he’s definitely not master of me
Now I think it’s time to have another cup of tea
And I may ponder the layout of the conservatory
I wonder if I need to remove one or two cat beds
Because I’m not really sure it’s working for me

But it’s definitely time for a sit down

With a cup of tea
And have a ColourMine read
There are so many poems
That are beginning to breathe
Won’t you join me.
A conservatory with cat beds, blankets, and pet items arranged around the room, including green and beige Katden's, a pillow on a far chair, andn soft clutter creating a cosy, lived in space.
