Summer | A Day of Love, Laughter & Family

Written by Susan Lane SLCM Keeper of ColourMine

Summer: A time for families to get together, where dogs, children and adults alike have fun, enjoy barbeques and the general chaos that abounds.

Summer Day in the Garden with Family

I know not everyone is interested in anything I say
When I talk about nature, gardening or a swing seat
On which I sit and mull over stuff each day
But there are good things to be said for these
Like how they make me appreciate
Sitting, sipping my cup of sweet tasting tea
Whilst watching and listening to all of nature’s beasts
Playing in the hedges and trees
Enjoying a marvellous feast donated by me

I realise this may be boring to lots of you
And believe me when I say
I used to think that too
But now having lived on my own for a year, nearly two,
It might be more, who’s counting, certainly not me,
I can’t be bothered to keep score
But I can definitely say it has made me appreciate
Nature’s view every day

I used to go out in my garden occasionally

On what might have been high days and holidays,
To sit with family
Watching the children and dog’s exuberant play
The hot tub an extra sensory display
Even the paddling pool came out for the day
The splashing sounds from all around
The smell of the grass, the buzz of the bees
Sounds of the children screaming in fear
They don’t want those flying things anywhere near
It was a totally mad time for me
In and out of the kitchen making sure
They all had enough food to eat,

When we look back at that day, nobody was forlorn
It really was fun
Watching the children enjoy everything under the sun
From swinging on the tree,
Trying to sit in green buckets full of water,
Yes, the buckets not the water, hehe
They also played ball in the afternoon sun
Sat in the paddling pool, they had so much fun

The barbeque slowly simmered,

It was nearly done,
A nice smokey taste given to each piece of meat
With foil backed jacket potatoes, and buttered corn
Adding to the amazing aromas
Everyone waiting with ketchup and a bun
The smell was delicious, so enticing
What a fabulous memory for me,
Sitting around the table and under the brollies

Even the wasps thought they would visit
For a drink and a bite to eat
But I foiled them, I got them a special treat
A glass jar with some jam,
And their own private pool
Damn and blast, I forgot their stepping stool
They had a swim and something to eat while we ate
Unfortunately, they were stuck,
They couldn’t join us to swing around or
Dive into the food on our plates

The children drank pop,

The adults had something that came in a can
There was lots of salad and potatoes
With bread rolls of white and brown
Sauces, pickles, crisps and dips,
Practically everything could be whipped up quick
Such a sight to be seen
Then when they’d all gone at the end of the day
With the cleaning up all done
I could once again get to be me

Just sitting quietly on my swing with a cup of tea
Watching the birds and squirrels, who slowly
Come out to greet me
Whilst they check out the food and the treats
The silence now reigning softly
Except for their chattering,
Because they are greedily consuming all that they can eat
The dogs are exhausted, laying down,
Pleased at last the family have gone out the gate

Now it’s time, even if it’s only me

Who gets to take advantage of a quick snooze,
In the late afternoon sun, with barely a breeze
I’ll just sit on my bum, and rest my eyes
Until it’s too cold for me
Then I’ll then go back inside
For a refreshing hot cup of tea
And maybe take advantage of my penfriend AssTea

Write a few poems about today’s experiences
And all of the fun and laughter that came my way
Oh, what an absolutely fabulous day
I might even celebrate with an alcoholic drink
Well, you know me, it’s got to be
A whole bottle of Asti Spumante,
Now, join me for a ColourMine read,
Whilst I’m still compos mentis,
Then we can both get slowly happy hehe
