Phone | Love the Old, Survival of the New

Written by Susan Lane SLCM Keeper of ColourMine

Phone: A damaged phone isn’t a disaster, but it does beg the question what to do next from deciding what is important, non-negotiable or tolerable, then checking availability on the open market.

Could a New Phone be on the Way?

That damned phone,
The battery now doesn’t even last a day
And takes about 8 hours to charge
Oh, woe is me
When I first got it with the 6000 mAh
It was brilliant, lasting 48 hours
Before the charging lead had to play
Although it’s hardly surprising
I’ve had it now for 2/3rds of a decade,

Other things are that there are;
No further android updates
These are set to annoy because the G9 Power
Plays silly games,
Opening and closing apps because it can
Not coming out of an app just being a knob
The camera taking one photo then
Shutting down, a flippin’ error
No not due to my dropping it on the ground
It doesn’t want to switch off or reboot when I want to
The touch screen doesn’t touch in certain areas
I know, that’s on me, but it is still damned annoying
And now I’m super irritated, cos I need to pee

My phone has also hit the floor occasionally

So, I’ve been thinking for a while
It’ll need to be replaced
That’s not for the faint hearted
Believe me
Don’t be fooled
It’s not because it’s going out of style
That’s not important

It doesn’t matter that it looks quite scruffy
With a slightly broken screen
And an even more scruffy phone case
Because the generic glass screen cover
Didn’t protect completely,
That wasn’t even the worst thing
The phone’s age is the worst
I probably won’t be able to find
A direct upmarket replacement
That will do everything that I need

I’ve got to say though,
I am very loath to make the decision
To let it go
My G9 Power has served me well all these years,
Doing what I want, no complaints or tears
Of all the phones that I have bought for me
This was the first one that has ever
Had a broken or chipped screen

I cannot believe I was such a fool

To drop it not once but quite a few
Usually, it was just a little bit
But the last time it really did take quite a hit
The glass screen protector and the actual screen,
Both got quite a bit of damage
Thank goodness I had another
Protective glass screen cover
Waiting in an envelope ready for me
For this eventuality

I swiftly removed the old cover
Thank goodness I did
It gave that phone a chance
To do me a service for another few years
Now though I think it might be time to let go,
To let another phone be the star of the show

Best I get a proper comparison done

With either Copilot, Gemini or ChatGPT
Ensuring I can choose the best in my price range,
That has enough ram, storage and battery life
I need lots of RAM you see,
So that I have sufficient working memory
To access any apps that might appeal to me,

Also accessing each and every poem,
No matter the length is non-negotiable
But I don’t want high end
That’s far too expensive for me
And I don’t do contract
Why would I be silly and pay
Anything in the region of £100 a month
That to me is sheer stupidity

I bought mine outright, on PAYG, no SIM

It’ll be mine for at least 6 years
Free calls, texts and sufficient internet,
That suits me
Now it’s time to go grab a cup of tea,
Figure out which new phone is best for me,
I know it’s got to be a Motorola
That’s the one I like because of its familiarity

I’m looking forward to sipping that cup of tea
But first I’ll relax on my swing.
Mulling over my ideas
I might even celebrate
With a nice cold glass of Asti Spumante
Won’t you join me, maybe we can even have a read
Of some of ColourMine’s poetry?
Just you and me?
