Cold | Love it or hate it | Rural life ColourMine style

Written by Susan Lane SLCM Keeper of ColourMine

Cold: Rural life doesn’t take heed of weather conditions or animal husbandry, doesn’t even care about an author out in the garden with the dog needing a pee. It’s just life, no explanation just experiencing normality.

Cold, Frost and Steak for Tea

Do you know it’s damn frosty outside
It’s so cold
It makes me want to run indoors and hide
I know it’s only a bit of frost, but, wowee
That slight breeze puts the temperature
At minus one degree

I walked on the grass leaving imprints
Not surprisingly
My footsteps like patterns similar to
The Abominable Snowman
Well, at that moment it could be me
Since I’m wearing my huge fluffy dressing gown,
Wandering around, it’s early morning
Only 2.30 hehe

Ice is forming on everything

Even on the containers of water
That overnight visitors drink
Those vessels are so shallow
So frozen,
The animals won’t be able to get a drink
The moon so full, the sky cloudless
Dawn is not as close as you might think

There will be another 3 hours
Before daylight will be seen
The cockerels next door
Start to clear their throats
Shouting for their breakfast feast

The cattle have been mooing all night long

I checked if they were ok
Making sure none had escaped
From where they belong
It has been known in the past
They’ve broken free
Just to find some fresh grass
They prefer it to hay or straw you see

The poor farmer had to round them up
To get them in the pen again
All on his lonesome, no help from me
I just phoned him to let him know
He didn’t ask for my help
I didn’t want to interfere
Not my place you see
And sometimes cattle are not friendly

Those were young males

When separated from mum
That’s where they stay
To be slowly fattened each day
Then eventually, off to slaughter they will be,
Never again to be seen by me
Then you and I can have steak or burgers
Or any other cut of meat for your tea

Does it put me off
No not me
I’ve got my fence high enough now
So, I don’t see
What’s happening over the back of me

That doesn’t mean that I’m not aware

Or that I don’t care
But it does mean
That I don’t have to watch them
Stop and stare
Because

I’m sure that even though they are animals
They are fully aware of the end result
Of their next journey
When they are loaded up from that yard

Some new animals of course,

Are not kept for your feed
Those are female, they are
Eventually, put out in a field
From which they go to be milked

They are also covered you see
By a big fabulous bull
Who is diligent and enthusiastic
About his job
To make sure there are many more animals
With feet on the floor

So, whether you like milk or meat

It has got to be done
And even the farmer
Doesn’t like reducing the numbers
Of any animal on their farm
It is just a part of their diversity
So that he or she and their family
Can survive to feed you and me

But I digress, because I believe
That even at this hour
It would be good for me to nip indoors
Make a cup of tea
Take it back to bed with me

Damn is it really only 2.30 in the morning

Best be quick and get back off to sleep
It’ll soon be time to get up for a pee
Then I shall be saying
Let’s have a cup of tea and a ColourMine read
Join me, hehe
