Written by Susan Lane SLCM Keeper of ColourMine
I was simply Susan Lane, an author discovering her voice. Today I write as Susan Lane SLCM Keeper of ColourMine – having walked further along the path I invited others to join. ColourMine is a poetic path of discovery & creativity which was originally started in November 2025, archived here as part of my ongoing practice and here we are today . . .
Join me on a journey of further discovery through the eyes of an author with experiences of life’s challenges and happy episodes.
ColourMine – January 2026 Update
I never thought that I could be
The creator of ColourMine, a website for poetry
Because I’m just an ordinary person, you see
And although I’m an author I write in a way that’s free
Maybe it will be helpful to you
If you see that it is something you can also do
By writing about things that have been
Either in your life or something that you have seen.
My experiences of problems may help you
They may be similar to what you yourself have been through
I’ve learned the hard way, not to give in
It’s been a tough road, but now I’ve found the way in
Parts of my life you will be able to see
The words in my poems are an expression of me
My life on occasion has been full of challenge and grime
But writing my poetry has made it easier in less time
I’ve looked at my life a slightly different way
And allowed the anger less purpose each day
I think I’ve found a much better version of me
And if that’s true then life is more pleasant
For those around me
I would love for you to see that you can also be
A person who likes writing, just like me
You can write a few words every day
That’s the beginning of your new path
That you’ve started to lay
Maybe you could describe the things that you do
The colours you see, the aromatic smells too
You could give any object a personality
Perhaps it wants to run and be free
It’s possible it might even want to climb a tree
Write about, as a child, what you wanted to be
Perhaps a fireman or married into royalty
With your pen in hand, think of all that you can do
The probabilities of airing your truth, your view
The possibilities are endless; the choices are here
Make the decision to take that step
Your life choices can begin for the rest of your life right here
You might like to write like me
Begin with something small and build effortlessly
Start with a title, a word, a paragraph or two
You can write anything; just think it through
A book or a poem is yours to behold
Maybe you’ll even get it sold
It could be a bestseller if you get my gist
So, hurry up and put it on your to-do list
You may have worked as a taxi driver or digging the road
Or even going about your busy day at home
It really doesn’t matter what you have done
You have the experience now; enjoy the fun
Whether it was good or bad, happy or sad
You can write about it in your own way.
Just describe the things you have done
Now let your fabulous ideas have a play
It would be good to let them out into the open today
You may have hobbies like knitting, fishing or calligraphy
Or get enjoyment from gardening or floristry
Whatever you have done in your life can be
An inspiration, so write it down, play with words
Nothing is out of bounds you see
If it gives you immense pleasure like it does me
Every subject can be aired.
Don’t you think it would be brilliant to share
To give voice to the way you feel, that way it keeps it real
To dump the baggage, you’ve carried all through
That you have gotten so accustomed to
And if you’ve never written before
Just enjoy the process, like thousands more
You know it’ll be fine, this way of life
Even writing about your trouble and strife
It’s quite fun, and I think it’s definitely for everyone
Poetry is the name of the game and inclusivity is the aim
ColourMine you see is fully inclusive
And is only interested in you
The only thing that is important and worthy is you
So, shout out loud, stand up and be proud
All your experiences are valid you see
Join with me and ColourMine inclusivity
ColourMine – If you think back to where I began
I was absolutely nowhere near where I now am
I was fumbling in the dark
Writing loads but it was all a bit stark
It was truthful like it still is today
But it wasn’t as smooth when it came by your way
I was learning more each day
More about everything the WordPress way
At that time, I was content to be, just the
Founder and Creator of ColourMine you see
That was good enough for me
I’m sure that since that time I have emerged more refined
So, that now I’m a
“Multiplatform Creative Director & Content Strategist.”
With all the other things I have since learned to do
Because of ColourMine poems
And building and maintaining the website too
Since November I have continued to write better original material
Learned to edit and format it more too
Managed the ColourMine brand voice
And overseen visual identity and experience for you
I’ve handled metadata, SEO, and tagging; it was all brand new
Published across multiple platforms, this was more recently too
I built audience pathways and maintained everything
Consistency across ecosystems – I learned that too
I even learned to track analytics and adjust strategy
And developed long-term creative direction
Damn, that was a lot of learning for me
So please do not think you can’t do anything like that too
Just make the decision to write and be a better you
Write proudly about all of your experiences
Whatever you may have done,
All the things you consider as fun
Then we’ll sit with a cup of tea
And do the dance with a notepad and pen
So that we can write everything for free
Won’t you come on and join me?
