ColourMine loves the garden, this is survival mode here

Written by Susan Lane

Where lawn care meets wildlife theatre – it’s the middle of the heatwave and the ColourMine garden is having a well-earned spruce-up.

Mowing the ColourMine Lawn in a Dry Spell

ColourMine and I are suffering
I think it’s still part of the heatwave
Because it was just so hot today
Usually with heat like this
I stay in the shade because it’s bliss
It could definitely have been cooler for me
I’m not keen on roasting you see

To trundle in, out and around the trees
That was certainly enough for me
And whilst it was all good fun
I was glad it was that quick to get it done
It’s always good you see
When you compare it
After you’ve cut down the weeds

It always looks so nice and fresh
I stand there and take a breath
I’m definitely pleased
The place looks so serene
With the trees swaying
Gently in the summer breeze
Oh, damn the grass dust has made me sneeze

Best nip in and get clean,
Then sit in the garden with a nice cup of tea
I can watch the birds swooping down to feed
From the feeders in the tree
They’re also pecking around
At the newly cut grass around

There are obviously tiny morsels
That I cannot see,
Little bugs in the grass
That are creeping around
Trying not to be seen
Heading for the compost bins as we speak

They are all eager you see
To find any food that might be
Easy and free,
With little or no work
That they can chomp through with alacrity

Eager Dining Hosts

What they don’t know is what awaits there
A few slow worms are in that lair
They’re waiting near the gate because
They are also eager you see
To greet their dinner which is approaching
At quite a speed

They sit quietly laying in wait
Not minding if they eat late
It’s all the better you see
If a meal is not rushed
Because there’s no time limit
No siree
They are the residents of this
The most fabulous restaurant
In ColourMine territory

So here I sit watching
All this going on before me
Waiting for the next inspiration
To hit me, then off I trot
For another cup of tea, and I think I deserve
Something to eat, hehe
