ColourMine | The love and survival of ginger

Written by Susan Lane SLCM Keeper of ColourMine

ColourMine: Life creeps up on you, colour slowly fades, enjoyment stays the same

The ColourMine Old Lady

You’re old and grey I hear you say
Does it really matter today
You must all realise
These things come for free
Born with little or no hair to see

Then mine turned ginger
What a bane that was for me
Especially when I went to Secondary
Then as an adult I realised you see
That the older generation were paying
Lots of money to get their hair done
The same colour as me

And best thing of all
I didn’t have to pay a penny
And it made me laugh because
I got mine for free

I was only one grandchild

That was ginger out of twenty
This continued until fairly recently
When a little bit of white
Started showing up for me

Damn, that was a definite shock
There’s quite a sprinkle you see
Must be the stress
Of there being only me

Putting up with my temper
That comes with my hair
And that also is free
The short or long fuse
Depending on the day

I used to keep it short

It was easy to manage you see
Whether it was cropped or permed
That was me,
Now it’s half way down my back
So very unusual for me

And it needs quite a trim
But what can you do
When your hairdresser has a problem
That you definitely don’t want

When you’re older you see
I gotta say Chicken Pox or Shingles
Definitely does not excite me
Especially over Christmas
Oh, no siree

I don’t want anything that is contagious

That is not for me
I don’t care what it is
No siree, I know that’s free but
I’m gonna avoid that one

Of that you can be sure
I’m quite definite that’s not for me
So, for the moment it will stay for me
All straggly and unkempt
If I get really fed up
I’ll tie it up

But it’ll be in the New Year
When hopefully, I can get it done
Then it can look absolutely fabulous
For the Spring
And in the meantime

There’s fabulous news for you and me

You can read lots of my brilliant poetry
Whilst you’re sitting with your cup of chocolate
Coffee, brandy or even
Yes, you’ve got it
A nice cold Asti

Or maybe a nice cup of tea
I might even sit on the swing
And relax, just thinking of my poetry
