The Big Hedge and The Birds
Oh, what a fabulous day
The sun is shining
Mustn’t delay
The little birds are here again
Making nests in which to have
Their families grow, eat and play
There are so many of them here today
Jumping in and out of the big hedge
Lots of romance at play
This is what they do all day
The Lady of the House
She came by
All the little birds
Fly away and quickly hide
They’re all bashful
When she comes out to feed
Sauntering along and throwing
Them some seed
They seem to hold their breath
Because they don’t want her to see
That they are waiting for all that feed
She puts out some food for them
And quietly goes inside again
She watches from the window
To see them all play
They even have a bath
In their drinking water
Oh, lovely, hehe
Hedge Life
This continues on and off all day long
With all those birds it’s quite
A noisy throng
All the different types and colours
To be seen
From the starlings with the oily sheen
Arguing and squabbling
What a scene
The blue tits that can at speed
Look quite green
Are in actual fact yellow and blue
It’s just the light that gives them
That lovely hue
They nip in and out
So very quick you see
Trying to get a photo is
An almost impossibility
The gold finches often appear too
With yellow, black and white
They all flit through
They’re really chirpy
Their call distinct in the morning
And evening hullabaloo
Then there’s the robins with
Their Christmasy hue
All beigey brown
With their nice red breast too
Singing away endlessly is what they do
Even the blackbirds with
Their dark feathers look glorious
They strut and look so important to me
Sometimes they’ll wait for food
And others they flee
All kinds of pigeons what a crew
Strutting around like they own
All this food
Can’t be bothered to argue
Just barge their way through
Now it will soon be
Bedtime but what do we see
Those little blue tits
Are wanting yet another feed
Well, just one fat ball
And a few nuts for you
Night-time Calls
That should keep you all fed
Until morning dawns for you
I’m sure you’ll agree
Then it will be time for another feed
But for now, we must be
Nipping off because it’s time
For us to be closing
Those curtains for sleep
It’s so lovely
And would you believe
It’s absolutely gorgeous
Waiting quietly
For the foxes to appear
Hoping to avoid me
Through the big hedge
They don’t make a sound
Just quietly sniffing around
They’re looking to see
If any food happens to have been
Left for them to hoover up
And then they can be
On their way
To the sanctuary next door
To check and see if they can score
Maybe a chicken on the paw.
Shhhh
